Numbers
In text, numbers one to nine should be written as words. Numbers above nine should be written as numerals:
Working for Brooke, you get up to 25 days’ annual leave each year.
You can carry over a maximum of five days’ annual leave.
Out of 12 countries, only five have animal welfare policies.
Note: this doesn’t apply to currency or dates, or labels such as page 5, room 9.
Avoid beginning sentences with digits. Either reword it or write the number in full:
Twenty-five million people live below the poverty line.
Around 25 million people live below the poverty line.
25 million people live below the poverty line.
Million/billion
Write million/billion in text when referring to animals or people: one million animals, 23 million people.
Abbreviate to m/bn for:
- Sums of money: £10m/£10bn
- Inanimate objects: 45m/45bn tonnes of coal
- Units: 30m/bn doses of vaccine
